Choose your own Spanish Adventure
Complete one of the activities listed below. You must do enough reading/listening/exploring to write a one-page response in English (1-inch margins, MLA heading, 12-point font, 1.5 spacing). Remember: The activity must be listened to/read in SPANISH. The response must be in English. Have fun! Enjoy the language!

Adventures
- Watch one of the 1 minute videos from "6 grados de separación: México conectado con el mundo". Write a summary and include some images.
- Find a commercial in Spanish. Transcribe it (Write out the script in Spanish) and email it to me with a link. If it is good, I will use it for class.
- Scour youtube and find a good Public Service Announcement or commercial in Spanish that we could use in class. Post the link and list at least 10 words you understood, as well as how you think it connects to class.
- Tumblr - Look at some of the Memes en Español (click here) or here or here. Answer the questions for three of the memes. Look under the pictures to find the questions.
- Look through these videos, read the questions, choose a few that interest you and listen to three of these videos and write a summary about what you heard.
- "Like" this Facebook page: 1001 Reasons to learn Spanish . Read some of the posts throughout the week and write about some of the ones that interested you the most. Try to link pictures and/or links.
- Investigate some local/community groups that are active in Hispanic cultural affairs. What do they do? What services do they offer? What can students to do help or volunteer?
- Complete progressively advancing levels of the free Duolingo app for at least 30 minutes over 3 or more weeks. Screen shot evidence of your progress.
- Explore Twitter Trends Map. Focus on the Spanish speaking countries. Read some of the popular #s or @ people and write about what you see.
- Listen and/or watch 5 songs/videos that were nominated for a Latin Grammy within the past 5 years. Decide which one you like best and learn the chorus.
- Read and listen to an article on Veinte Mundos. Write a reflection describing what you learned.
- Watch a Spanish telenovela or TV program for one hour. Almost all cable packages have at least one Spanish-language network. You probably have Univision!
- Read a Spanish-language magazine for 30 minutes (may be online). Suggestions:
- Read/listen to Spanish news on line. Suggestions:
- Play on one or more corporate Spanish-language websites for 45 minutes, such as:
- Read a book in Spanish for 30 minutes
- Read 3 familiar chapters of the Bible in Spanish.
- Read the directions in Spanish of seven items in your house (e.g. detergent). Figure out what it's telling you.
- Read the last 50 tweets using a Twitter hashtag (#) for a Latin-American country or city. Make sure your Twitter settings are set to Spanish for this. Explain what is happening in that city or country. Find a news article related to one of the topics being discussed.
- Read an article about a famous Latino musician or politician in Spanish on Wikipedia. (The article must be at least 500 words.)
- Watch 3 videoclips on sports and 3 videoclips on current news on ESPN Deportes and/or Univisión, totaling at least 20 minutes of video.
- Compile a list of 30 words involving the profession you hope to have, on 3×5 cards for your review. Your reflection can be ½ page instead of a page describing your career plans and the training and skills needed.
- Explore the Spanish-language section of Barnes & Noble (music, kids’ books, and/or adult books) for 30 minutes and find two things you would like to own. Take a picture of them and post to share with others.
- Using post-it notes, post-it 10 items in your house that you don’t know the word for and leave it there for a week, then report to me from memory what all the items were.
- Do one of the activities having to do with commercials in Spanish here. You need to click on a commercial, watch the commercial and do the worksheet. The worksheet replaces your reflection page.
- Go to a Latino restaurant and using your phone, or flipvideo camera, record the meal/food/decorations with your commentary in Spanish.
- Listen to and/or watch 3 (or more) songs/videos in spanish. Here is a good YouTube playlist to get started.
- Watch a television show in Spanish (make sure it is school appropriate!). Here are some places you can find good shows:
- Netflix - with subtitles in English.
- Hulu Latino - with subtitles in English.
- Atresplayer - from Spain - you will have to create an account for this, but it is free - some shows even have subtitles in Spanish.
- Play Trivia Crack in Spanish. Answer at least 10 questions. You can have several games going on at the same time, so that you don't have to "wait" for your opponent to answer.
- Watch 15 minutes of an episode "100 Latinos Dijeron" (Family Feud en español).
- Text a Spanish-speaking friend or family member for 15 minutes in Spanish. You should have at least 40 messages total. Use the transcription in place of a write-up.
- Volunteer in some way the requires you to use Spanish for at least 30 minutes. Document your work.
- Find literature (handouts/flyers/pamphlets) in Spanish while you're out in the community. Read it and bring it to class to share.
- Find a Day of the Dead event to take part in.
